In an interview with Spanish outlet TelecincoBukhari, a private military contractor and personal protection expert, shared insights from his four years working alongside Ronaldo during the footballer’s time at Real Madrid.
As part of Ronaldo’s personal security team, Bukhari accompanied the star to high-profile events in Madrid and around the world. His day rate reportedly reached up to £850 (US$1,154), translating to a weekly income of £4,250, £21,250 per month or £255,000 a year.
Despite the challenges that come with protecting one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet, such as dealing with obsessed fans, paparazzi and security incidents, Bukhari said the job was relatively low-risk compared to protecting individuals with higher threats.
“We have a good relationship,” he said, as quoted by The Sun. “Working with him wasn’t like working with someone threatened with death or kidnap. We had some silly incidents with paparazzi or crazy fans, but nothing major. He is the best boss I’ve ever had.”
Bukhari emphasized the high-stakes nature of professional security work.
“We have to be willing to protect a person, and sometimes we have to give our lives to protect them. If I have to use weapons, I will use them. The most important thing is having the ability to think quickly, solve problems, and remain calm in difficult situations.”
Ronaldo left Real Madrid in 2018 for a four-year stint with Juventus, before rejoining Manchester United in 2021.
His return to Old Trafford ended in controversy, and he later signed with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr in 2023.
Ronaldo recently completed his contract with the club.
