A massive banyan tree fell across the road near the Government Higher Primary School in Menala on Friday morning due to strong winds and rain, disrupting vehicular movement for nearly four hours. The incident caused significant inconvenience to school and college students, as well as the general public, with government and private buses, cars, and jeeps stranded in long queues. Some vehicles took alternative routes to bypass the blocked stretch.
The uprooted tree also damaged an electric pole, snapping power lines and cutting off the electricity supply to the area. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.
Honeybee attack during tree removal
During the clearance operation, thousands of honeybees, which had built a hive inside a hollow section of the fallen banyan tree, suddenly swarmed out and attacked people nearby. Abdul Menasinakane, the SDMC President of the school, suffered multiple stings to his head and face and was rushed to a private hospital in Ishwaramangala for treatment.
With bees swarming the school premises in large numbers, authorities decided to declare a holiday for the day to ensure student safety.
Local youth and residents worked together to remove the fallen tree and restore traffic. Later, branches of other potentially dangerous trees in the vicinity were also trimmed as a precautionary measure.
Representatives from the Munnuru Gram Panchayat, Mescom, and other officials were present during the clearance operation.
