Upcoming Test Series Against England
The highly anticipated five-match Test series against England is set to commence on June 20, with the opening match taking place at Headingley. A significant challenge for the team will be filling the void left by the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With these two stalwarts stepping away, the responsibility of leading the squad now falls to the young Shubman Gill, supported by Rishabh Pant as his vice-captain.
Rishabh Pant Discusses His New Role
During a recent press conference, Rishabh Pant spoke about his transition into a senior player and his responsibilities as vice-captain. He emphasized that while he acknowledges his seniority, his primary focus remains on his role as a middle-order batsman.
Rishabh Pant Becomes The “Senior”
Pant expressed, "It feels good, but it also comes with the responsibility of sharing my knowledge and experience with the younger players joining the team. However, I try not to dwell too much on being a senior; my main goal is to play well and continue learning as an individual while supporting those around me."
“Just A Batsman In Middle Order”
He further added, "While I understand the added responsibility, when I’m on the field, I don’t think about my titles like vice-captain or senior player. I focus solely on being a batsman and doing my best, trusting that the game will unfold as it should."
Addressing the Gap Left by Kohli and Sharma
Pant acknowledged the significant impact of Kohli and Sharma's departures, stating, "Yes, they were big figures, and their absence will be felt. However, this also presents us with an opportunity to cultivate a new team culture while building on the existing one."
He concluded, "We aim to maintain a positive mindset, assist new players in adapting to overseas conditions, and foster a supportive environment within the dressing room. That’s our goal moving forward."
