5P principles: In today's modern life, obesity and rapid decline in fitness have become a serious health challenges. This is largely associated with malnutrition. To tackle this problem, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has promoted the adoption of the principle of "5 P" in diet. This new initiative not only promotes safe food but also inspires to adopt a healthy lifestyle. This campaign aims to reduce obesity and stay fit and encourage people to adopt better food habits.
What are the 5 P's?
What are the '5 P's'? FSSAI has introduced the concept of "5 P's". Including fresh fruits, vegetables and adequate water in your diet is very beneficial for your health. It provides your body with essential nutrients, keeps you hydrated, and helps prevent many diseases.
Know the meaning of 5 P's
- The first 'P' in '5 P' stands for 'Plenty of Fruits Vegetables and Water'; that is, abundance of fruits, vegetables and water. You can include fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables and enough water in your diet, it not only provides nutrition but also helps in improving metabolism and keeps the body hydrated.
- The second 'P' is 'Pick Healthy Fats', which means choose healthy fats in the diet. 'Good fats' are fats that help reduce heart disease, cholesterol levels and obesity in the body, besides contributing to the smooth functioning of the body. These are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which you should focus on. Fats obtained from nuts, seeds or olive oil are good examples of 'good fats'.
- The third 'P' is 'Power your plate with balanced nutrition' - it is about maintaining a balanced diet. A balanced diet has a balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Protein is an important nutrient for the functioning of the body and is also essential for keeping muscles strong. Carbohydrates provide us with energy to carry out daily tasks. Fat is also a source of energy which plays a role in bodily functioning when consumed in balanced amounts.
- The fourth 'P' is- 'Plan meal time mindfully' - that is, pay careful attention to the timing of meals. For this, you should eat at the fixed time. Many experts advise to keep a gap of at least four hours between two meals. This gives the body enough time to digest the food, which plays an important role in better digestion. Therefore, one should get rid of the habit of eating something or the other repeatedly without any reason. Apart from this, according to Ayurveda, food should be chewed properly. Do not drink water while eating. However, you can drink water half an hour before and after eating.
- The fifth 'P' is - 'Pay attention to portions and food choice', that is, pay special attention to the selection and quantity of your food. For this, eat the right amount of food and stay away from processed or junk food. Digestion is also affected by overfilling the stomach. Also, excessive consumption of junk food increases the risk of many diseases, whereas nutritious food helps in keeping the body healthy.
With a balanced diet like this, variety in the diet can not only reduce the risk of obesity, as it also improves metabolic health. The consumption of processed food has increased very rapidly in India in the last two decades. This is a major reason for the growing problem of obesity. Meals planned under the '5 P' can be a part of your lifestyle that is not limited to just losing weight, but it promotes a holistic health approach. Under holistic health, things like exercise, yoga and meditation are also being encouraged along with a balanced, varied diet. So start changing your diet from today and contribute to fighting obesity.
