Ahead of Father’s Day, take a look at these stories of real men who broke the mould and rewrote the rules of fatherhood.

These men are redefining fatherhood with love and compassion.

A son’s role model, a daughter’s safe space, the silent protector of the family, fatherhood means leading a multi-faceted existence, while somehow trying to constantly juggle the many responsibilities that it demands. Although those who go by the book remain unquestioned by our society, others who try to break the mould are met with immediate disapproval, a regrettable outcome of our patriarchal roots.

However, despite the eyebrows that they raise, here are some fathers who have led the way when it comes to rewriting the rules of fatherhood.

Sougata basu and mayank kalra

What’s better than having one dad? Having two! Sougata and Mayank, parents of two adorable children, are a living, breathing testament to this joyful statement. In a country where same sex couples often struggle to start a family, their story stands as a beacon of hope.

While it comes with a ton of responsibility, fatherhood, for the couple, is a dream come true. They say, “Becoming parents has made us calmer, patient, more giving and forgiving, all while we discover facets of each other we didn’t know existed.” The pair, who fortunately enjoy immense parental support, believes that with love by your side you can conquer anything, which is why they encourage every queer couple looking to embark on this journey to not be deterred by the challenges and be proud of their decision.

The Desi Dog Father- Sunil Kaushik

A father’s love knows no bounds, proving this is Sunil Kaushik, also known as ‘The Desi Dog Father.’ A parent to over four hundred rescued animals, Sunil, founder of the IndieLove Welfare Foundation. He may not be your traditional father, but the unconditional love he carries for his kids would make anyone say otherwise. His day, which starts at 6:30 every morning, revolves around them. From taking care of their visits to the vet to making sure each baby is well fed before he has his meal, Sunil says the biggest lesson fatherhood has taught him is to ‘Love without expectations’.

“While we tend to expect our kids to act a certain way, for me, my kids need not be perfect in the world’s eyes for me to spoil them with love,” expresses Sunil. He dreams of a world where one day an animal’s life will hold value, wherein even if people don’t like animals, they will know both legally and morally, an animal’s life holds the same value as a human’s.

Pranshu dwivedi

In a society where mothers often have to bear the weight of caregiving alone, Pranshu, a stay-at-home dad, is not only redefining fatherhood but also breaking gender norms along the way. He, who has played this role for over a year, says, “The fact that I get so much attention as a stay-at-home dad is a symptom that fathers are still not seen as caregivers, we need to remove gender out of basic and fundamentally important roles.’

Due to his choice, he has also been subjected to multiple stereotypes by ignorant family and friends who wonder how he stays around his kids ‘all day.’ Though Pranshu often ignores them, he is trying to bring about a change and normalise equal parenting by writing extensively about it on social media.

This Father’s Day, these remarkable men are showing us that fatherhood isn’t defined by convention, but by compassion, presence, and purpose. In embracing their unique paths, they are not only parenting but also paving the way for a more inclusive and empathetic world.
