Mumbai: Every lunar month in the Hindu calendar marks a phase of the moon—and with each, comes an opportunity for spiritual cleansing and divine blessings. Among the most sacred observances is Sankashti Chaturthi, a monthly fast dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. In 2025, the Krishna Pingala Sankashti Chaturthi falls on Saturday, 14 June, and brings with it not one but three auspicious yogas, making it a spiritually powerful date to observe the fast and perform Ganesh Puja.
Sankashti, derived from ‘sankat’ meaning difficulty, is a vrata (vow/fast) kept by devotees to seek liberation from troubles and hardships. Since Lord Ganesha is revered as Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles) and Dukhharta (remover of sorrows), Sankashti Chaturthi holds immense spiritual importance. Devotees believe that by fasting on this day and worshipping Ganesh, they can clear the path of both material and emotional challenges. The tradition of Sankashti fasting is believed to have started as early as 700 BCE, and continues to be widely followed even today.
Significance of Sankashti Chaturthi 2025
On this day, devotees worship Lord Ganesha in his Krishna Pingala Maha Ganapati form, often invoking his blessings at Shri Shakti Ganapati Peeth. As per legend, Lord Krishna once narrated the significance of this fast to King Yudhishthira during the Dwapar Yuga. Hence, this practice is rooted deeply in Vedic tradition and helps devotees connect with Ganesha’s divine energy for protection, wisdom, and relief from troubles.
Fasting begins at sunrise and continues till moonrise. After spotting the moon (Chandrodaya), devotees offer Arghya (water or milk) to Chandra Deva and conclude their fast. The moonrise time plays a key role in Sankashti rituals, making it a pivotal part of the evening’s observance.
Triple Auspicious Yogas on 14 June 2025
The Ashadha Krishna Paksha Chaturthi is especially significant this year due to three powerful yogas aligning with the day:
- Brahma Yoga to 1:13 PM
- Indra Yoga from 1:13 PM until night
- Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga from 12:22 AM (15 June) to 5:23 AM
Additionally, a rare Shivavas Yoga forms from 3:46 PM onwards, which is believed to mark Lord Shiva’s divine presence with Goddess Parvati on Mount Kailash. These yogas enhance the spiritual potency of all rituals performed on this day.

Why Worship the Moon on Sankashti?
Offering Arghya to the Moon with raw milk is not just a symbolic gesture—it is believed to reduce the malefic effects of Chandra Dosh (Moon afflictions in the horoscope). This simple ritual, when done with faith, is said to restore emotional balance, reduce anxiety, and promote mental peace.
