Demolition Campaign in Madras Camp
On Sunday, Delhi's Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the demolition operation conducted in Madras Camp was strictly in accordance with court directives. She explained that the court had mandated the removal of this slum settlement four times to facilitate the cleaning of the Barapula drain, aimed at preventing future flood-related disasters in the capital. Gupta emphasized that residents of Madras Camp have been allocated new homes and have been relocated accordingly.
Court Orders and Government Actions
During a press interaction, Gupta reiterated that the government and administration have no choice but to comply with court orders. She clarified that the Madras Camp was established along the Barapula drain, which necessitated its removal for machinery to be deployed for cleaning. Without this action, Delhi could face floods similar to those experienced in 2023. She stressed that the court's orders must be respected and that residents have been successfully moved to new accommodations.
Political Reactions and Accountability
The Chief Minister also mentioned that similar actions have been taken in other areas, including the Railway Colony. Targeting leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for politicizing the issue, she questioned who would be held accountable if lives were lost due to these demolitions. Gupta pointed out that actions were taken in three locations, including the Railway Colony, which is a slum near the railway tracks. She asked whether AAP leaders like Saurabh Bhardwaj, Atishi, or Arvind Kejriwal should be blamed if any harm came to individuals. She concluded by stating that the court is aware of its responsibilities, which is why it issued these orders.
