Significant Seizure of Ambergris in Goa
In South Goa, law enforcement officials have apprehended three individuals following the discovery of whale waste, known as ambergris, valued at ₹10 crore. This information was confirmed by a police officer on Friday.
Acting on a tip-off, authorities intercepted a vehicle in the village of Sanguem on Thursday, recovering 5.75 kilograms of ambergris, which is commonly used in the production of perfumes.
Ambergris is produced in the intestines of sperm whales and is classified as a protected substance under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Protection Act. This designation prohibits the possession or trade of any of its derivatives within India.
According to a police spokesperson, the value of this whale waste could reach approximately ₹10 crore in the international market. The arrested individuals have been identified as Sainath Shet (50) and Ratnakant Karapurkar (55), both residents of Goa, along with Yogesh Redkar (40) from Sindhudurg, Maharashtra.
Authorities are currently investigating the origins of the ambergris.
