Wifi 6 technology is going to start soon in India. The government has decided to bring the 6GHz spectrum band under deliction, assuming the year -old demand of tech companies. According to the Gazette notification issued on 16 May 2025, a draft of the rules to this band has been prepared. This has now opened the path of superfast broadband internet and better wireless connectivity in the country.
What is the benefit of 6GHz spectrum?
The 6GHz band is extremely important for modern wireless techniques like Wifi 6 and Wifi 6e. At present, only 2.4GHz and 5GHz band are used in India. Whereas 6GHz based Wifi 6 can get speed of 2GBPS from technology, which is twice the existing 1GBPS. Its coverage area is also high, which makes the network connectivity more stable and fast-especially for high-speed needs like gaming and streaming.
Government’s big step
According to the government’s draft notification, the frequency between 5925 MHz to 6425 MHz will be licensed for low power and ultra-loo wireless access devices. This means that now devices working in this range will be able to work without any government permission.
However, the use of this band will be banned in oil rigs, land vehicles, boats, aircraft (below 10,000 feet), and drones or unmanned air systems.
Tech industry welcomed
The Broadband India Forum (BIF) had made this demand from the government for a long time. According to BIF, companies were losing up to ₹ 12.7 lakh crore every year due to delay in use of Wifi 6. The organization also includes satellite companies like ONEWEB, Tata Nalco and Hughes along with legendary companies like Meta, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Cisco.
Bif says that there is a dire need of 6GHz band to give better digital experience to new-age devices such as Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glass, Sony PS5, and Ar/VR headsets.

6GHz is a radio wave band, used for over-the-air data transmission. In Wifi 6e, this band gives less interfensions, higher speed and better performance. This will not only increase the speed of the Internet, but will also keep the connection strong in the crowded network.
