
The
Lili, who married Dave in 2011, kept their personal life relatively out of the spotlight. Speaking to

"The diagnosis was really scary. We were told that his chances were small. But we didn't know. Every family who has this diagnosis, they go through the same. It's like the rug has been pulled from under your feet. It's the uncertainty," she recalled.
"You feel robbed of all the plans that you have or had. You feel that you're not in control of your life any more. Something else is in control. You don't know which way everything is going to go. It's that fear of what's coming."
She also recalled recently a moment where her dog Ted pounced on a newly hatched gosling, to which Lili reacted, "I felt so sorry for that little creature, and I felt all sorts of other things. You go into, 'I wasn't able to save the little gosling. And I wasn't able to save Dave.'"

Speaking about after he died, Lili said, "But do you know something? It will sound weird, but I feel him everywhere. He's not gone. There are little things happening in the house; things come and go and disappear and reappear."
Dave never had any children. He first met Lili 20 years ago from the other side of a reception desk in a Transylvanian hotel. She had already given birth to two children from a previous marriage, but later divorced him.
After their first encounter, Dave and Lili emailed each other for two years before calling her for 30 seconds a day, then more than once a day. In 2007, she moved with her 11-year-old daughter to Dave's home.
