Daughters are shining in science! For the first time, more girls passed from the science stream than the arts.

For the first time in the country, the number of girls passing 12th science stream has become more than the arts. According to the report of the Ministry of Education, this change is the result of the increasing confidence of daughters and government schemes.

A new and inspiring picture has emerged regarding the education of daughters in the country. This is the first time that the number of girls passing class 12th from science stream has become more than the girls passing from arts stream. This information has come to the fore after the analysis of the results of 66 education boards by the central government.

According to the report of the Ministry of Education, in the year 2024, 28.1 lakh girls passed from 12th science stream, while 27.2 lakh girls passed the exam from arts. These figures show a big change. Compared to previous years, in 2022, 28.2 lakh girls passed from arts and only 23.3 lakh girls passed from science. Even in 2023, Science (25.6 lakh) lagged behind Arts (29.6 lakh).

Popularity of Science stream increased continuously in 11 years

Data from 2013 to 2024 shows that there has been a continuous increase in the number of students passing 12th from Science stream. While 36.3 lakh students passed 12th from Science in 2013, this number reached 61 lakh in 2024. The number of girls has also increased from 13.4 lakh to 28.1 lakh.

Government schemes and facilities became helpful

The Ministry of Education has attributed this change to the availability of Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs), smart classrooms, subject based laboratories and qualified teachers in schools. Also, many measures have been taken to advance girls in studies under the Samagra Shiksha Yojana.

Daughters of deprived sections also ahead

The report said that now girls from backward classes and scheduled tribes are also opting for science stream more. While 1.7 lakh girls from these sections passed from science stream in 2013, this number has increased to 4.1 lakh in 2024. 60,000 girl students of ST community were passing science in 2013, which has now become 1.4 lakh.

Decline in commerce stream

However, during the same period, the number of students in commerce stream has decreased. While 18 lakh students passed 12th from commerce in 2022, this figure has come down to 16.8 lakh in 2024.

Improvement in pass percentage, but challenges remain in some states

The ministry says that the pass percentage of 10th and 12th has improved in almost all the states of the country. But some states like Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh have lagged behind.

Demand for more seats for further studies

School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar said that now when students, especially girls, are showing increasing interest in science stream, it is important that the number of seats for STEM courses in higher education should also be increased. In collaboration with the states, it will be ensured that students do not face any problem in further studies.
