Mumbai’s Dahisar Police have arrested a cybercriminal from Bengaluru for allegedly misusing women’s photos on social media. The accused, 25-year-old Shubham Kumar, originally from Bihar, worked as a security guard in Karnataka. According to police, Shubham would send friend requests to women online, and if they declined, he would create fake profiles using their photos to defame them.
Police investigation revealed that Shubham had so far created fake Instagram profiles in the names of 11 different women. He used to post morphed obscene pictures and messages on these accounts and depicted those women as sex workers. Police further said that when the accused's mobile was investigated, 13,500 pictures of women and girls were found. He had also created about 100 fake email IDs, which were used to create social media accounts and carry out activities anonymously.
Further investigation revealed that on January 31, 2025, a college student filed a complaint stating that someone had created a fake pornographic Instagram account in her name, attempting to tarnish her image. Acting swiftly, the Dahisar Police launched a probe and, with technical support from Facebook and Google, traced the accused to Karnataka.
Police said the accused, Shubham Kumar, used to message women on Instagram and coerce them into participating in nude video calls. When they refused, he misused their names and photos to post explicit content online. He is now in police custody, and a detailed forensic examination of his digital devices is underway.
