Jawali: In a notable decision, the Judicial Magistrate Shashikant in Jawali has sentenced an individual involved in the illegal smuggling of liquor to one year in prison, along with a fine of ₹15,000. The court also stipulated that if the fine is not paid, the offender will face an additional month of imprisonment.
Assistant District Public Prosecutor Ravi Kumar represented the prosecution, detailing that on August 8, 2011, around 5:45 PM, Head Constable Rajinder Kumar was conducting a routine patrol near the PWD Rest House in Fatehpur with his team.
During this patrol, they observed a man, later identified as Bantu from Ghanor, carrying a white plastic can. Upon noticing the police, Bantu attempted to escape, which raised suspicions.
The police detained him and inspected the can he was carrying, discovering it contained five litres of illegal liquor. Bantu could not provide any legal documentation for the possession or transport of the alcohol. Consequently, an FIR was filed against him at the Jawali Police Station under the relevant sections of the Punjab Excise Act.
The prosecution noted that the accused has a history of over 15 previous cases under the Excise Act, indicating he is a habitual offender.
After thoroughly reviewing witness statements and considering arguments from both sides, the court reached its verdict on Wednesday, finding the accused guilty and imposing the aforementioned sentence.
