Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The Indian SUV market is set for a major shake-up as two of its biggest players, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, are gearing up to introduce a trio of new hybrid SUVs. This strategic push is aimed directly at consumers who want the space and style of an SUV without compromising on fuel efficiency.
Maruti Suzuki’s Two-Pronged Attack
Maruti Suzuki is doubling down on its successful hybrid strategy with two new models:
- Flagship 7-Seater SUV (Codenamed Y17): Set to be the brand’s most premium offering, this new 3-row, 7-seater SUV will be based on the established Grand Vitara platform. It will utilize the same powerful and efficient strong hybrid system found in the Grand Vitara, positioning it as a direct competitor to other large family SUVs.
- Maruti Fronx Hybrid: The popular and stylish Fronx crossover is getting a significant powertrain upgrade. Maruti plans to introduce a new variant equipped with its acclaimed 1.5-litre strong hybrid engine. This move will make the Fronx one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class, promising an impressive mileage of around 28 km/l.
Hyundai Enters the Strong Hybrid Fray
Not to be outdone, Hyundai is preparing its own contender to enter the increasingly popular strong hybrid segment. The company is developing a 7-seater hybrid SUV aimed squarely at challenging the market dominance of the Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder. This new model will likely feature a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a robust hybrid system, marking Hyundai’s serious entry into the fuel-efficient family SUV space.
These upcoming launches signal a clear industry trend: blending the road presence of an SUV with the cost-saving benefits of hybrid technology, offering more choice than ever for Indian car buyers.
