Arrest of the Suspect
A 44-year-old individual has been taken into custody by the Delhi police for allegedly swindling a woman out of ₹29 lakh, as confirmed by an official.
Details of the Accused
The suspect, identified as Chotmal Saini from Sikar, Rajasthan, is reportedly wanted in connection with two separate cyber fraud incidents.
How the Scam Worked
Authorities revealed that the victim was enticed by a promise of employment online. She was directed to a fraudulent website where she was encouraged to invest money, only to be shown fictitious returns in her digital account.
Manipulation Through Social Media
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Southwest, the victim believed the scheme was legitimate and continued to invest, ultimately depositing ₹29 lakh into various bank accounts specified by the scammers. The accused, masquerading as investment advisors, communicated with her through social media to persuade her to keep investing.
Cyber Extortion Case Uncovered
On June 16, the Delhi Police dismantled a cyber extortion ring, arresting two individuals, including the alleged mastermind, involved in a scheme that blackmailed victims via nude video calls. This investigation was initiated following a complaint from Ankit Kumar Kain, a Shahdara resident who fell prey to the scam.
The Blackmail Incident
As per police reports, Kain encountered a woman named Nandini on the dating platform QuakQuak. After exchanging WhatsApp contacts, she initiated a video call while undressed, capturing Kain's image. Subsequently, she blackmailed him, threatening to release the video unless he paid her. Fearing public disgrace, Kain transferred ₹35,000 to a Bandhan Bank account provided by the extortionist. When further demands for money arose, he reported the incident on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP).
