Lee Anderson slams 'useless' Labour MP after Reform snub - 'up to his neck in it'

has slammed a "useless" Labour MP who accused the Tories of not investigating in the UK despite rejecting calls for an inquiry himself. Telford MP Shaun Davies claimed Rishi Sunak and Amber Rudd "refused to provide a statutory inquiry", yet a letter which he signed has since surfaced, which asked the former Home Secretary not to investigate his constituency.

Mr Anderson has now accused Labour of letting its MPs get away "scot free". Writing on X, the Ashfield MP said: "Up to his neck in it. This useless MP for Telford has been put onto the Home Affairs Select Committee by his own party to scrutinise the Home Office. This is the same committee they refuse to allow @reformparty_uk MPs sit on. This Labour government and its MPs are getting away scot free with every passing day."

His comments come in response to the video of Mr Davies speaking in the Commons, where he said: "The then home secretary Amber Rudd and the then local government minister Rishi Sunak refused to provide a statutory inquiry into Telford."

As leader of Telford and Wrekin Council 2016, Mr Davies wrote to Ms Rudd and then Prime Minister Theresa May, rejecting the need for an inquiry into child sexual abuse in the town.

The letter, signed by the Labour MP and nine other officials, said: "We do not feel at this time that a further inquiry is necessary."

The letter continued: "We have had three inquiries into this issue in 2016 and understand that the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse chaired by Professor Alexis Jay OBE will assess the extent to which we have learned lessons."

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has also furiously responded to his "outrageous statement": "This Labour MP will be exposed soon enough. He sat in the chamber trembling, made this outrageous statement and ran off.

"He was, of course, the council leader in Telford who actively requested no national investigation and has the cheek to smear Amber Rudd and Rishi Sunak."

A Labour spokesperson said: "The previous Conservative government rejected requests for an independent public review into child sexual abuse in Telford. Following these rejections, the council commissioned a locally led independent probe.

"After acting on the findings from this inquiry, the progress of the council's work under Shaun Davies's leadership was found it to be positive 'without exception' and a 'model' for safeguarding victims last year.

"The Tories sleepwalked through this appalling scandal. The Labour government is bringing forward the biggest child protection reforms in a generation. No more empty words or 'lessons learned', but real action to keep children safe."
