For long, Gill has been nicknamed ‘Prince’, which tells that many see him as the next great Indian batter and the successor to Virat Kohli. Shubman Gill Career Overview

Shubman Gill was born on September 8, 1999 (making him 25 years old), in Fazilka, Punjab. Like many Punjabi boys, he would grow up idolising Yuvraj Singh, who would go on to become his mentor later in life. Gill first gained international attention during the 2018 U-19 World Cup, in which he was the vice-captain of the Indian team and scored 372 runs in six matches at an average of over 120.

That same year, he was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs. 1.8 crore. At the same time, not only was he doing well for Punjab in domestic cricket across formats, but he also became the youngest captain to take a side to the Deodhar Trophy final at the age of 20.

In January 2019, Gill made his national team debut when he played in the ODI against New Zealand in Hamilton but then fell out of the team for two years.

Towards the end of 2020, Shubman made a proper return to the Indian Cricket Team in ODIs and Test matches against Australia. As the team needed a young top-order batter, he was the answer.

In the meantime, Gill had become a consistent scorer for KKR in the IPL, having back-to-back 400-run seasons in 2020 and 2021. But when he was drafted by the Gujarat Titans in 2022, the youngster evolved into one of the best top-order batters in the country.

By this time, Gill was a regular in ODIs and Tests, replacing an ageing Shikhar Dhawan. In 2023, he not only made his T20I debut but also scored a mammoth 890 runs in the IPL, the second-most by a player in one season. At this point, the title of ‘Prince’ had been given to Gill, as he was seen as the successor of ‘King’ Virat Kohli as the next great Indian batter.

With his stylish shots and elegant stroke play, Shubman is the kind of player one can watch batting all day. Shubman Gill had a decent 2023 ODI World Cup with India and became one of the best ODI cricketers in the world, scoring the most runs in the format that year.

In 2024, Gill was named the captain of GT in the IPL. And now, only in his second year, he has led the team to the playoffs. In 2025, Shubman has also become the captain of the Test side, marking a new era for the Indian Cricket Team.
