Singapore Airlines and its budget subsidiary Scoot will expand their Asian services following the planned closure of Singapore-based Jetstar Asia next month.
Australian airline Qantas announced last week that it would shut down its loss-making budget subsidiary on July 31, citing rising operational costs, higher Changi Airport fees and intense competition, Reuters reported.
Scoot plans to launch new services to Okinawa in Japan and Labuan Bajo in Indonesia, destinations that are served exclusively by Jetstar, The Straits Times reported.
From August it will increase its flights to Bangkok, Thailand, from 35 to 39 a week and to Penang, Malaysia, from 21 to 28 a week.
Singapore Airlines will increase its services to Colombo, Sri Lanka, from seven to 10 per week, to Jakarta, Indonesia, from 63 to 70 and to Manila, the Philippines, from 28 to 35.
It will also increase the number of weekly flights to Phuket in Thailand from 30 to 42.
