Hollywood films started the weekend in India on a strong note, with live-action remake ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ leading the way. It registered a good Rs 9.85 crore on its opening weekend, courtesy of healthy support from family audiences and a bit of good word of mouth.
The movie opened at Rs 2.25 crore on Friday, increased to Rs 3.60 crore on Saturday, and rose even more to Rs 4.00 crore on Sunday. This consistent increase during the weekend suggests a good performance in the coming weeks. If it continues like this, it can quite easily cross the Rs 30 crore nett mark in India—a remarkable feat for an out-and-out live-action release.

Meanwhile, ‘Ballerina’, a spin-off of John Wick, had a less than impressive opening. It collected Rs 7.65 crore in three days. While popularity of the franchise gave it a push on day one, the decline to Rs 2.50 crore on Sunday after a Saturday haul of Rs 2.80 crore indicates that it could not hold viewers’ attention.

Saturday: Rs 2.80 crore
Sunday: Rs 2.50 crore

In a turn of events, the romantic comedy ‘Materialists’ did relatively well given a limited run. With little hype and a small cross-country release, it started low at Rs 55 lakh on Friday but doubled its take over the weekend. The movie raked in Rs 1.15 crore on both Saturday and Sunday, taking its total to Rs 2.85 crore. If it continues at this rate, it may just reach the Rs 10 crore mark at the end of its run.
