A major accident struck Mathura’s Govind Nagar area on Sunday when a large mound near Shahganj Darwaza suddenly gave way, causing five houses to collapse. Initial reports suggest that nearly a dozen people, including children and labourers, may be trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are ongoing at the site.
The incident occurred near the Siddh Baba Temple, where an old earthen mound suddenly began to slide, turning nearby structures into rubble within minutes. According to locals, several families lived in the affected houses, and construction workers were also present on a nearby wall under repair at the time of the collapse.
Police and district administration teams arrived promptly and began rescue efforts using JCBs and other equipment. So far, four people have been rescued from the debris and rushed to the district hospital in critical condition. Among them are two sisters who were visiting their grandmother’s house when the incident occurred.
Eyewitness Sanjay Rohila, a local revenue officer, was nearby when the collapse happened. “I was taking out my car from the garage on a bike with my wife and son when I saw the mound sliding. We abandoned the bike and ran for safety,” he said. Sanjay suffered minor injuries as debris fell in the vicinity.
He also reported witnessing two children fall with the collapsing earth, and noted that several labourers working on the site were buried. Emergency teams are continuing to clear the rubble in search of survivors.
