As tensions between Iran and Israel spiral into open conflict, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stepped up efforts to ensure the safety of Indian nationals, particularly the more than 1,500 students, mostly from Jammu and Kashmir, stranded in Iran.
In a statement released on Monday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the Indian Embassy in Tehran is “closely monitoring the security situation” and “actively engaging with Indian students to ensure their safety.” In some instances, students have been relocated to safer areas within Iran with the Embassy’s assistance. Other options, including possible evacuation strategies, are reportedly under consideration.
The Indian mission is also in regular contact with community leaders across Iran, the MEA added. Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has urged all nationals and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to remain vigilant, avoid panic, and stay in close touch with the mission. A Telegram channel has been set up for updates, and a Google form has been shared via social media to gather updated contact details of citizens in Iran.
The MEA’s assurance came shortly after Jammu and Kashmir’s former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah requested External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to intervene on behalf of the stranded students.

Iran-Israel Conflict
The conflict intensified last Friday when Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion,” a military offensive targeting Iran’s top military leadership and nuclear infrastructure. Iran retaliated with a barrage of missiles, escalating fears of a full-scale regional war.
The Indian missions in both Iran and Israel have issued helpline numbers and are coordinating with local authorities. Indian nationals in the region are advised to limit movement, follow safety advisories, and await further updates from the government.
