Temba Bavuma hits back at Australia’s mind games after South Africa’s big win

For years, South Africa repeatedly fell short of claiming major trophies, unable to convert strong tournament performances into ultimate success. This struggle felt like a heavy burden on the team’s shoulders.

That changed dramatically when Aiden Markram and captain Temba Bavuma masterminded a thrilling 282-run chase at Lord’s, securing a historic victory and earning national acclaim.

In addition to facing a determined Australian side with a strong winning culture, the Proteas had to overcome the psychological weight of their past disappointments, a challenge Australia clearly targeted during the match. Bavuma spoke openly about this mental hurdle after the win.

“While we were batting, we could hear the Australians throwing around that dreaded word: chokers. We entered the final with plenty of confidence, but also many doubters. Even how we reached this stage was questioned. This victory puts all those doubts to rest. It gives us, as a nation often divided, a moment to come together,” Bavuma said.

South Africa’s most recent painful loss had come in the 2024 T20 World Cup final, where they surrendered from a winning position against India. This triumph at Lord’s, however, offered a measure of revenge for the heartbreaking 1999 World Cup semifinal defeat to Australia, also on English soil.

“As a country, this is a chance to celebrate something positive, to set aside our problems and unite. I hope this achievement continues to inspire everyone. Many doubted this group of players, but the way we performed has erased those doubts,” the Proteas captain added.

Markram, who earned the man-of-the-match award, agreed with Bavuma.

“It feels fantastic to finally silence those voices. Completing the job and moving past that stigma is a huge milestone for us. Every question that’s been raised before has now been answered,” he said.
