Read, Digital Desk : Huawei is officially retiring its iconic “P” series of smartphones and ushering in a new era of innovation with the “Pura” lineup. The name, derived from “purity” and “beauty,” signals a fresh start, and the first devices to carry it—the Pura 80 series—are making a bold statement, especially with a jaw-dropping camera on the top-end model.

Launched in China, the new series includes four distinct models: the Pura 80, Pura 80 Pro, Pura 80 Pro+, and the star of the show, the Pura 80 Ultra.

The Main Event: A Retractable Camera on the Pura 80 Ultra

The Pura 80 Ultra is designed to dominate the world of smartphone photography. Its most stunning feature is a retractable 50MP main camera. When you open the camera app, the lens physically extends from the phone’s body. This isn’t just a gimmick; this mechanism allows Huawei to fit a massive 1-inch sensor and a complex lens structure into a slim device.

This advanced camera also boasts a variable aperture (f/1.6 to f/4.0), which lets it adapt to different lighting conditions much like a professional camera, and sensor-shift stabilization for incredibly steady shots. Huawei claims it can capture crystal-clear photos of objects moving at speeds up to 300 km/h, making it perfect for action shots.

Power Across the Board

While the Ultra’s retractable lens steals the spotlight, the entire Pura 80 lineup is packed with high-end features. The Pro and Pro+ models also feature powerful main cameras with variable apertures, ensuring excellent photo quality across the series.

A standout feature for the Pro+ and Ultra models is two-way satellite calling and messaging via China’s Beidou system. This allows users to make calls and send texts even when they have no cellular reception, a potentially life-saving innovation. The standard and Pro models also get satellite connectivity for messaging.

Under the hood, the phones are powered by the new Kirin 9010 chipset, continuing Huawei’s push for self-reliance in processor technology. All four models feature stunning Quad-Curved LTPO OLED displays with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, protected by durable Kunlun Glass.

Battery life is another strong point, with large batteries and blazing-fast charging speeds. The lineup supports up to 100W wired charging and 80W wireless charging, meaning you can get back to a full battery in minutes.

Pricing and Availability

For now, the Huawei Pura 80 series is exclusive to China, with no official word on a global release. The pricing starts at CNY 5,499 (around $760) for the base Pura 80 and goes all the way up to CNY 9,999 (around $1,380) for the top-tier Pura 80 Ultra.

With its bold rebranding and a truly innovative retractable camera, Huawei is signaling that it’s still a major force in smartphone design, pushing the boundaries of what a mobile device can do.
