Monsoon Forecast for Odisha
According to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of the IMD, Odisha is set to experience extensive monsoon rains in the next few days. He indicated that a cyclonic circulation forming over the Bay of Bengal will create favorable conditions for the southwest monsoon to advance into central and eastern India, leading to increased rainfall in these areas.
The IMD has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall across various districts in Odisha from June 14 to June 18 due to this cyclonic activity.
The conditions are ripe for the monsoon to further progress into different regions of Odisha over the next two days, with expectations of its reach extending into parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar within three days.
Currently, a cyclonic circulation is situated over northern Odisha and nearby areas at altitudes between 3.1 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward as it rises.
Another system is located over the west-central Bay of Bengal, off the coast of north coastal Andhra Pradesh at an altitude of 5.8 km.
Additionally, a third circulation is present over southern Bangladesh and adjacent areas of the North Bay of Bengal, extending as a trough into southern Odisha at 3.1 km.
These systems are anticipated to boost rainfall and thunderstorm activity throughout the state.
On June 15, districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal are predicted to face thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h, and isolated heavy rainfall.
Similar weather conditions are expected on June 16 for Gajapati, Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Koraput districts. An orange alert has been issued for June 17 for Sundargarh, Koraput, and Keonjhar districts due to heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Yellow warnings will remain in effect for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Koraput.
Thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall are anticipated in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh on June 18 and 19.
