Strawberries will stay fresh for up to seven days by following the advice of one food expert. Culinary producer Kelli Foster shared exactly where to store the summer fruit in your fridge, as well as including the ideal container.

Writing on recipe website, The Kitchn, she said the method should help strawberries to last five to seven days. She revealed the crisper drawer is the best place for the berries, writing: "If you don't plan to eat your strawberries the day you bring them home, the best place for them is in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. It helps to maintain humidity and keep the berries from losing moisture and becoming dry."

She added that "they should last up to five to seven days."

Before you get to the fridge, she also recommends removing the berries from the original container and storing them whole and unwashed in a different one.

A glass jar is generally recommended because it is more breathable and doesn't trap moisture as readily as plastic, which could lead to mould and quicker spoilage.

Foster recommends only partially closing the container, which helps avoid a build-up of condensation, and lining it with paper towels to absorb any excess moisture.

To avoid the delicate strawberries from getting crushed, they should be laid in a single layer.

However, if you plan to use strawberries the day you bring them home, there's no need to put them in the fridge, because they taste sweetest at room temperature, so they can be left on the kitchen counter.

The berries can also be frozen. According to Martha Stewart's website, the frozen berries should retain their peak flavour for about six months. Afterwards, their taste may start to deteriorate.
