In view of potential landslides caused by heavy rains and movement of large vehicles, the Udupi district administration has issued an order prohibiting the movement of heavy vehicles on the Agumbe Ghat section of National Highway 169A (Tirthahalli–Malpe road) from June 15 to September 30.
According to the order, only light motor vehicles will be allowed to ply on the Agumbe Ghat during this period to prevent damage to the road and avoid risks due to landslides along the fragile stretch.
Heavy vehicles travelling from Udupi to Tirthahalli have been instructed to take an alternative route via Udupi–Kundapura–Siddapura–Mastikatte–Tirthahalli.
It may be noted that Udayavani had earlier reported the absence of vehicle restrictions on Agumbe Ghat despite the onset of the monsoon, raising concerns about the safety of the route. Following these concerns, the district administration has now implemented the restriction as a precautionary measure.
