Shubman Gill's Record In England: A Worrying Trend For Team India
ABP Live Sports | June 14, 2025 1:41 PM CST

Cricket fans are eagerly looking forward to the five-match Test series between India and England, starting June 20.

This series marks the beginning of a new chapter for Indian cricket, with Shubman Gill leading the Test team for the first time following the retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the longest format.

It also kicks off the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both teams, making it a high-stakes series from the outset.

Shubman Gill's Challenge: Poor Record in England

As India’s new red-ball captain, Shubman Gill will be under the spotlight.

While he brings promise and potential, his Test record in England is underwhelming. In three matches on English soil, Gill has scored just 88 runs, with a top score of 28. His lack of experience against England adds to the pressure as he takes on leadership responsibilities in tough conditions.

With Gill still finding his footing overseas, India will rely heavily on experienced batters like KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Karun Nair to anchor the innings. India last won a Test series in England back in 2007, and breaking that 18-year winless streak will require top-class performances.

Karun Nair, who famously scored a triple century against England in 2016 (albeit at home), has shown strong recent form, smashing a double century in a recent unofficial match against the England Lions. KL Rahul also impressed with a century in the same series, adding depth and confidence to the batting unit.

India's squad for England tour: Shubman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (vice-captain and wicketkeeper), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
