Many people mistakenly store tomatoes in the fridge after they've done a food shop. An expert at Hisense UK, who aims to , has revealed that the should "never" be stored in a refrigerator.

"Cold air halts the ripening process, which diminishes their natural flavour and results in a mealy texture," the expert warned. "During warmer seasons, store in a shaded bowl on the counter for the best taste and texture." But tomatoes aren't the only popular food item households are incorrectly in the fridge.

"Modern refrigerators - especially those with smart cooling technology are designed to preserve freshness," said the expert.

"However, incorrect food storage can lead to poor taste, texture changes, and unnecessary energy use."

The expert added: "As temperatures increase during spring and summer, it's particularly important to rethink what you're putting on those shelves."

For those who have decided to buy fresh basil leaves for a lovely dish, you may notice that they quickly wilt when stored in the fridge; that's because they're not meant to go in there.

"Cold air damages basil's delicate leaves, causing them to turn black and wilt," the expert revealed.

"Basil thrives best in a jar of water at room temperature, much like fresh flowers."

"Contrary to popular belief, bread stales faster in the fridge due to a process called retrogradation," the expert pointed out.

"During warmer periods, store bread in a cool bread bin or freeze slices for later use instead of refrigerating."

Even avocados shouldn't be stored in the fridge, but this only applies to unripe avocados.

The expert explained: "Chilling an unripe avocado delays the ripening process indefinitely.

"Keep them at room temperature until they yield slightly to pressure, then refrigerate only if needed to extend shelf life by a couple of days."
