
Incident Overview
Media reports have suggested that former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, was among the passengers on Air India flight AI 171. This Boeing 787 Dreamliner took off from Ahmedabad at 1:38 PM on June 12, 2025, but tragically crashed shortly after in a residential area of Meghani Nagar. Initially, it was reported that Rupani was the 12th passenger on the flight, seated in 2D. However, it was later clarified that he was not on board during the incident.
Details of the Crash
The Air India flight, which was en route to London, crashed just moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport. In total, there were 242 individuals on the aircraft, including 10 crew members. Authorities have expressed concerns regarding potential casualties resulting from the crash. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the flight had 232 passengers and 10 crew members on board.
Government Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, instructing them to travel to Ahmedabad and provide immediate assistance to those affected by the crash. Air India confirmed the incident via a post on social media, stating that flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick had crashed today.
