In a significant ruling, a court in Kaushambi district, Uttar Pradesh, sentenced a man to life imprisonment on Wednesday for the murder of three young girls by poisoning candy. The court also imposed a fine of ₹35,000 on the convict.
The Additional District Government Advocate (Criminal), Anil Kumar Chaudhary, reported that on August 17, 2023, the complainant, Rajkumar Prajapati, filed a complaint at the Karda Dham police station. He stated that his daughter, Varsha Rani, aged 8, was sleeping on the roof when their neighbor, Shiv Shankar, allegedly threw poisoned candy onto her bed from his terrace.
According to the complaint, Varsha picked up the candy and shared it with her cousins, Sadhana (8) and Shalini (6), after coming downstairs. Soon after consuming the candy, all three girls began to show severe symptoms. Tragically, they succumbed during treatment.
Chaudhary confirmed that the court, presided over by Additional District Judge Shirin Zaidi, found Shiv Shankar guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with the monetary penalty.
