Mumbai: In the rich fabric of Hindu traditions, Vat Purnima Vrat holds a deeply revered place, especially among married women. Celebrated with devotion and feminine grace, this sacred fast is observed to pray for a husband’s long life, good health, and a joyful, harmonious marriage. The ritual is rooted in the belief that observing this vrat bestows akhand saubhagya—unbroken marital bliss—and divine protection from all misfortunes.
In 2025, Vat Purnima will fall on Tuesday, 10 June, coinciding with the highly auspicious Jyeshtha Purnima. The tithi will begin at 11:35 AM on 10 June and end at 1:13 PM on 11 June. However, according to the traditional Hindu calendar, the vrat and puja should be performed on 10 June itself, as per the udaya tithi (sunrise-based) and purnima vyapini (full moon influence) rules.
What Is Vat Purnima and Why Is It Celebrated?
Vat Purnima Vrat is primarily observed by married women who pray under the Vat Vriksha (banyan tree) for their husbands’ longevity and wellbeing. According to scriptures, the roots, trunk, and branches of the Vat tree are believed to be the dwelling place of the divine trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). Worshipping this tree is believed to bring the blessings of all three deities, resulting in peace, prosperity, and spiritual elevation within the home.
This vrat also strengthens love, trust, and compatibility between spouses. It is particularly recommended for couples facing marital struggles or those seeking blessings for progeny.

- With deep devotion, they perform parikrama (circumambulation) around the banyan tree 7, 11, 21, 51, or 108 times, wrapping raw cotton thread around the trunk during each round.
- With each round, heartfelt prayers are offered for the husband’s long life and happiness.
- If possible, the parikrama is done with the husband, as it is considered highly auspicious.
- Offerings of fruits, sweets, and soaked black gram (chana) are made.
- After the puja, women read or listen to the Vat Savitri Katha, which narrates the tale of Savitri’s unwavering devotion and spiritual strength.
