Arsenal are reportedly on the cusp of a major coup, with talks to bring Martin Zubimendi to the reaching an advanced stage.

Having caught the eye of several top-tier English sides over the past 18 months, it looks like might edge out the competition. And the player's decision to turn down Liverpool nearly one year ago suggests the Gunners' approach may be about to bear fruit.

"My philosophy is to do what I feel at all times. So far, things have gone well for me," he said in October 2024 when asked if he regretted turning down the opportunity to join Liverpool (via ).

"The best thing for me was to stay here [at Real Sociedad] and I am happy and at peace. There is a lot of noise because of the press but in the end everything is easier than all that."

His commitment to the cause remained unfazed by early-season turbulence: "Of course, I don't regret it, I can't think that after four or five games at the start of the season. I made my decision from within.

"I thought it was the best thing to do, the results don't affect me. I see potential in this team, you just have to watch us train and I'm excited about having a good season."

It's understandable that players may have felt some trepidation about joining Liverpool after they parted ways with Jurgen Klopp last season. Whether it stemmed from a lack of attachment to the Anfield side or anticipation for an alternative that struck a chord, Arsenal have now almost got him to U-turn on his decision 12 months ago.

Despite the failed move for Zubimendi, newcomer Arne Slot lifted the Premier League trophy in his inaugural season. Not to mention he was on track for a treble before narrow defeats in both the Champions League round of 16 and Carabao Cup final thwarted those dreams.

In contrast, Arsenal ended up a distant second in the Premier League and were knocked out in the third round of the FA Cup. It seemed as though Arteta's title drought might be quenched in the Champions League, but both that and the Carabao Cup run were halted in the semi-finals.

However, this doesn't seem to have dissuaded Zubimendi, as a move to north London appears increasingly likely. And there may even be one potential rival he's especially keen to face should he make the switch to England this summer.
