A Journey to Self-Reliance in Agriculture

Bhawanipatna: In Kalahandi district, a farmer has set a remarkable example of self-sufficiency by shifting his focus to marigold flower cultivation, moving away from conventional crops.

With the backing of government initiatives and his own determination, local farmers are exploring varied agricultural practices beyond traditional farming.

Muniram Patel, an innovative farmer from Mukundpur village in the Dhamanpur panchayat of Golamunda block, has established a distinct identity through his marigold farming endeavors.

Transitioning from vegetable cultivation, Muniram embraced floriculture in 2018 with help from the Horticulture department. Together with his wife Gitanjali, he began growing marigolds on a 50-decimal plot in their backyard. What began as a trial has evolved into a lucrative year-round business.

The marigold crop has not only provided Muniram with financial rewards but also earned him recognition. He claims that the flower farming yields impressive profits with minimal investment. "I make approximately Rs 1 lakh each year solely from marigolds," he shared.

In addition to being a source of income, the vibrant orange flowers have transformed his garden into a picturesque area, akin to a public park, especially during the monsoon when the blooms are at their peak. Unlike typical home gardens that wilt after the rains, Muniram's marigold field thrives throughout the year.

Florists from Bhawanipatna, Junagarh, and Dharmagarh frequently source flowers from him. Gitanjali mentioned that marigolds now command a higher price than vegetables, retailing at Rs 60 per kg. The couple invests three hours each morning and evening tending to their flower garden. Each marigold plant, which lasts about six months, produces around 5-6 kg of flowers.

"In today's world, regardless of what you cultivate, if you commit your time, effort, and resources with sincerity, success is achievable," Muniram stated, a belief he has validated through his flourishing venture.
