A new series has rocketed to the top of - and viewers are freaking out after discovering it's based on a chilling real-life case that shocked the world. Good American Family, which dropped on 19 March, 2025, has soared to the number one spot on the streaming platform and shows no signs of slowing down. The eight-part drama, now streaming via Disney+, stars Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid.

It follows the bizarre and controversial story of Natalia Grace - a Ukrainian-born girl with a rare form of dwarfism who was adopted by an American family in 2010. She was believed to be seven years old at the time.

But what unfolds is a psychological thriller worthy of a horror film - and in fact, many have compared it to the 2009 movie, Orphan. After being returned by her first adoptive family, Natalia was taken in by Kristine and Michael Barnett.

But the new parents soon raised alarm bells, claiming Natalia wasn't a child at all. Instead, they believed she was a grown adult posing as a child - and far worse, that she was dangerous.

Kristine Barnett made headlines when she accused Natalia of multiple disturbing acts. She claimed the girl was "threatening to stab her family in their sleep", trying to "poison her coffee" and attempting to "push her into an electric fence". Natalia has denied all of the allegations.

The Barnetts took their concerns all the way to court in Marion County, Indiana, where they successfully had Natalia's birth year legally changed from 2003 to 1989 - declaring her an adult.

They then moved her into an apartment, paid her rent for a year, and left her behind in the United States while they relocated to Canada. But the story didn't end there.

Natalia later accused them of abandonment, and the couple were charged with neglect of a dependent. Those charges were ultimately dropped in March 2023, but the case sparked a media frenzy and left the public divided.

And now the drama has been reignited through Good American Family, where the creators take audiences deep into the mystery.

One viewer wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: "The writers on #goodamericanfamily spent three episodes convincing us that Natalia Grace was an adult, a menacing one at that.

"Scene after scene, they had her torturing the family. Now they're walking it back? Suddenly, the parents are the villains? I'm so lost."

Another added: "Tough story where doubts are created from the beginning. The cast is spectacular. Eight chapters from different points of view and only one reality. I wish there had been a ninth chapter to have the finishing touch."

The debate surrounding her true age and identity continues to divide opinion.

With its shifting perspectives, eerie parallels to Orphan, and a story almost too bizarre to be real, Good American Family is the kind of true-crime thriller that has everyone talking - and questioning what, or who, to believe.
