Veteran filmmaker Thiagarajan recently addressed the unexpected use of the iconic song “Malaiyuru Naattama…” from his film ' Mappillai ' in the recent hit movie ' Tourist Family .' The song, originally picturized on his son Prashanth , was featured in a light-hearted scene where actor Sasikumar dances along with his on-screen children. While the scene and song quickly gained popularity online and trended across platforms, many were curious about whether proper permission had been sought for its inclusion.
Thiagarajan responds with positivity
In a candid interview with Indiaglitz, Thiagarajan revealed that the 'Tourist Family' team had not obtained official permission to use the track. Despite this, he expressed no resentment. “I didn’t give them any approval, but I was happy to see the song being embraced by audiences again. I even congratulated the film’s team,” he said. According to him, several people advised him to take legal action or demand royalties, but he firmly dismissed the idea.
A rare gesture of gratitude
Demonstrating rare magnanimity, Thiagarajan went on to say, “If anything, I should be the one paying the 'Tourist Family' team. Their use of the song brought it back to life and connected it with a whole new generation. That’s something to be celebrated, not contested.” He emphasized that his priority is the joy that music brings to people, not legal or financial disputes over copyright.
A stand for artistic freedom
The filmmaker further declared that he has no intention of claiming copyrights for any songs from his past films, even if others use them in future projects. “It gives me happiness to see my work still appreciated after so many years. I won’t ask for money now, and I never will,” he stated. Fans have since taken to social media to praise Thiagarajan’s generosity and positive attitude toward artistic sharing.
